Cook County Jail Population (2012-2018)

The jail population data reflects the population in the jail held pre-trial or serving short sentences and is referred to as the divisional population or the general population. This population does not encompass the entire population confined in the Cook County Department of Corrections, which also includes those ordered to court-ordered programming within jail custody, those in the hospital on the jail campus, or those held in the jail from other counties. The total confined population is typically 5-10% higher than the general/divisional population. The general population data is compiled here by taking the daily population reports issued by the Cook County's Sheriff's Office's Bureau of Strategic Operation and Information, using the daily data on the general population and averaging those numbers for each month. The entry for each month then represents the average general population for any single day of that month but may not represent the actual population on any particular day.

This contains information about deaths that occurred in Cook County that were under the Medical Examiner’s jurisdiction. Not all deaths that occur in Cook County are reported to the Medical Examiner or fall under the jurisdiction of the Medical Examiner. The Medical Examiner’s Office determines cause and manner of death for those cases that fall under its jurisdiction. Cause of death describes the reason the person died. This dataset includes information from deaths starting in August 2014 to the present, with information updated daily.

JAC - Monthly CCDOC Population

This dataset measures the total of detainees in the Cook County Jail, also known as the "behind the wall" population. This is a monthly average generated from daily population totals provided in a daily public report by the Cook County Sheriff.
